About the Journal
About us
We have been publishing ODL research since 2003. Our publishing status is confirmed by our registration on 18th October 2002 as the Asian journal of distance education [ http://www.AsianJDE.com ], and as Asian JDE. From this date, we operate all our trademarks and copyrights.
Our front cover of the Journal is similar to the Journal homepage with green squares drawn in perspective going into the distance, each square symbolizing the fertile rice field representing each Asian country.
Then the JCSat4 satellite which is used in this region is drawn transmitting signals to and from the fields. This symbolizes our wish for countries in Asia to share what they have with others in the same country and others in neighbouring countries through our Journal. The same symbolism is used in drawing the letter ‘A’ for Asia (shown below) which we use on each Paper.
Origin
The concept of the Journal originated through our association with the Asian Association of Open Universities. We hear that they have now followed our advice and launched an AAOU Journal under the direct control of their Executive Committee. We exercise far more latitude, opportunities, and freedom in expression to researchers throughout Asia. It has been clear to us since 2001 that there was a need and demand for such a journal, and we are pleased to have realized the Journal as a direct response to these with the great support of many key figures.
Aims and Scope
The main aim of the Asian Journal of Distance Education (AsianJDE) is to disseminate scholarly works and information useful to researchers and practitioners in the growing field of distance education in Asia. The Journal also aims to provide a forum for discussions within and directly relating to distance education, and so elicits theoretical and practical solutions to address issues concerning distance education. The AsianJDE has a specific focus on the Asian context as well as the global context. Author Guidelines for contributions are given on the site pages.
The scope of AjDE is manuscripts on distance education, open and distance learning, educational technology, and online learning. AjDE considers manuscripts that present qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies, critical reviews or analyses, and theoretical positions.
Registration
Our legal status is firm. Asian Society for Open and Distance Education (ASODE), Japan, in collaboration with EdTechReview (ETR), New Delhi, India, is the Publisher of the Journal. Prior to this, the Journal was registered with the Japan Ministry of Justice for legalization as a judicial entity as a Non-Profit Organisation, and Ministry of Finance because even NPO must declare their books for tax! although we have been zero-rated always, and have an all-volunteer crew. Due to our international status, we are reported as a Non-Government Organisation NGO.
Distinguished Editorial Board
We have global support from highly respected leading researchers in ODE, and this is evident in both the quality of Papers we receive and in the support we have from our distinguished Editorial Board. It is not easy to attract leading Western researchers - perhaps we are successful because Asia still holds some Victorian exotic image. It is true that many regions of Asia haven’t changed much in the past one hundred or two hundred years, yet a few regions have become the most highly developed in the world. The task facing us is somehow to equalize access between these two regions - thousands of times over throughout Asia.
Peer Review Process
AjDE has a two-stage review process.
(1) The first stage is an initial editorial review (also known as Desktop Review, Screening Review) by one of the lead editors, resulting in either a decision to send for peer review (stage 2) or an editorial rejection.
(2) In the second stage, a Lead Editor or an Associate Editor will be assigned to manage the review process.
All article submissions to the AjDE undergo double-blind peer review by a minimum of two subject experts in the field. This means that neither the authors nor the reviewers are made aware of the identities of each other. It is therefore essential that authors remove all identifying information from their papers in the first instance. This includes removing references in the text that would enable reviewers to identify authors. Names, institutional affiliations and references can be added if the paper is accepted for publication.
Peer reviewers are chosen based on their research interests and their expertise in the research method.
Peer reviewers are asked to evaluate and judge submissions using the following criteria:
1. Contribution to the field and AjDE
2. complete, coherent, and well-organized presentation;
3. sufficient explanation of the significance of the problem;
4. clear demonstration of the relevance to the field (beyond the case presented);
5. compelling presentation of the problem within a theoretical framework (where appropriate);
6. establishment of a relationship between the problem and ODL and other relevant literature;
7. appropriate research design and method;
8. accurate and useful interpretation;
9. sound argument and analysis;
10. effective conclusion about the implications for distance education theory, research, and/or practice.
Reviewers' comments are extremely important to help the authors revise and improve their papers.
